Capture a web source with Zotero Connector and inspect metadata

The Zotero Connector identifies bibliographic data on pages you visit and saves an item to Zotero. The quality of that item depends on the metadata the page provides. Start from the article or catalog record you intend to cite, then check the saved fields against that source. Save the source

1. Open the source page. For an article, use its page on the publisher’s site when available. For a book or another cataloged work, use the catalog record that identifies the work. If you are on a search-results page, open the individual result first. This gives the Connector the metadata for the source you mean to record rather than for a page that merely points to it. 2. Check what the Connector recognizes. Its icon changes according to the type of item it can save. Use that indication as a prompt to inspect the result, not as proof that every field will be correct. 3. Save the item, then open the saved record. Do the field check immediately, while the source page is still in front of you. A successful save tells you that a record was created; it does not establish that the page supplied a complete citation. Keep the source visible so you can compare its wording and dates directly with the new item.

4. Compare four fields with the source. Check that the title names the work you opened, each creator matches the credited author or organization, the date matches a date presented for the work, and the URL leads to the intended source page. For a catalog record, pay particular attention to whether the saved title and creator describe the work rather than the catalog page. Correct missing or mismatched fields using information shown by the source. Do not fill a gap from memory.

5. Resolve gaps before moving on. If the Connector produced only a web page item, the access date records when the page was accessed; it does not supply a publication date. Look on the source page for any missing creator or date. If the source does not state one, leave that field unresolved rather than inventing it. Verify before citing

• The saved title identifies the source you meant to capture.
• Creator names and the date agree with information visible on that source.
• The URL points to the source page, and the access date has not been mistaken for a publication date.
• Any correction can be traced to the source page; any field the page does not establish remains unresolved.

The metadata check affects the next task. Zotero builds bibliographies from selected item records, so a missing creator or incorrect date in a newly captured item can flow into a reference list. Inspect those fields against the source page before using Quick Copy or Create Bibliography; changing the output style cannot supply missing source facts.
