Convert a PDF to an editable Word document

To make a PDF editable in Word, convert it in Adobe Acrobat and check the saved document before relying on it.

Convert in Acrobat

Open the PDF in Acrobat. Select Convert from the global bar, choose Microsoft Word in the left pane, and select DOCX or DOC from the menu. Select Convert to DOCX or Convert to DOC, then choose a location, name the file, and save it. DOCX is the newer format; choose DOC if you specifically need the older format. These are Adobe’s documented steps. The format choice alone does not tell you how well your PDF’s layout will convert.

Decide whether conversion is useful

If you only need to read the PDF, you may not need a Word file. If you need to edit it, the document’s content matters. Word offers a separate route: it can open a PDF and create a converted copy. Microsoft says this works best for mostly text PDFs. In Word’s conversion, a page dominated by charts or graphics may become an image whose text cannot be edited. Microsoft also identifies tables with cell spacing and some footnotes as elements that may convert poorly.

Those cautions describe Word’s conversion, not a tested result from Acrobat. They still give you a useful decision point: if editable chart text or exact table relationships are essential, do not assume that producing a Word file will meet the need. Keep the original PDF as your reference.

Check the saved file

Open the Word file beside the PDF and compare the parts you intend to use. Check reading order and layout, then inspect important tables for entries in the right rows and columns. If a chart must be editable, confirm that its text can actually be selected and changed. Correct any consequential difference before using the Word file for that task.
