Crop PDF margins and understand what stays hidden

Cropping PDF margins in Acrobat on the web changes the area shown on each page. Use it when you want to improve the page’s appearance or remove excess white space from view. If a margin contains confidential material, do not treat a clean-looking crop as proof that the material is gone.

Crop the margins

From the Acrobat on the web home page, select Edit > Crop pages, then Select files to upload the PDF. Drag the border handles inward so the unwanted margins fall outside the crop area while the content you need stays inside it. To use the same crop settings across the document, select All under Page Range, then select Crop. Adobe says the resulting file is automatically saved to Adobe cloud storage. Check before using All: pages with different layouts may place text, page numbers, or marks closer to an edge. A boundary that works on one page could hide something useful on another. Open the saved PDF and inspect a few pages with the widest or least consistent layouts, especially their outer edges. If needed content is missing, adjust the crop rather than accepting a uniform setting.

What a crop may leave behind

Adobe’s desktop crop note says cropping hides content and that resetting the page size restores the original view. That note describes the desktop product; the web instructions document a visible-area adjustment, not a method for removing confidential content. If removal is your goal, use a method intended for that purpose and verify the resulting file separately.

Field note : synthetic PDF: A 612 × 792-point test page placed “PRIVATE MARGIN NOTE 73” near the left edge and “INVOICE BODY” farther inside. After pypdf set its CropBox to [200, 72, 540, 720], the cropped width was 340 points. Poppler’s rendering showed only “INVOICE BODY,” but pypdf text extraction from the saved PDF still returned “PRIVATE MARGIN NOTE 73.” This demonstrates a failure mode for that CropBox test: hidden text remained extractable. It does not establish how Acrobat on the web processes or stores a cropped file.
