Redact contact details in a screenshot
Use Snipping Tool’s contact-detail redaction and manually review the entire saved screenshot before sharing it.
Use Snipping Tool’s Quick redact for email addresses and phone numbers in a screenshot, then inspect the entire result manually before sharing it. The documented feature has a specific contact-detail scope, so the final review matters even when Quick redact has been applied.
Capture the relevant screen in Snipping Tool. Its official guide documents Text actions for recognizing text and Quick redact for email addresses and phone numbers. Open Text actions, apply Quick redact, and review the resulting screenshot. Check each contact detail you intended to conceal. If an email address or phone number is still readable, do not treat the screenshot as ready to send.
Continue across the whole image rather than checking only the recognized text. Look at headings, fields, images, and any other visible content for private details that the contact-detail action does not cover. Decide whether each remaining detail belongs in the version you plan to share. Save a copy after the screenshot is appropriate for its recipient, and inspect that saved copy before attaching or sending it. Reviewing the file you will actually share helps catch a mismatch between the image you edited and the one you selected later.
If an account number, address, browser tab, or other detail remains visible, do not assume Quick redact will handle it. Microsoft documents Window and Rectangle snips in the same guide. A new, smaller capture can exclude information outside the part the recipient needs. If the private detail sits inside the essential area, prepare a deliberately edited copy using a tool whose output you can inspect, or provide a text description instead of that screenshot. Keep the unredacted original out of the attachment selection.
Microsoft documents Quick redact for email addresses and phone numbers; it does not establish that all private content in a screenshot will be found or concealed. The manual review is therefore part of this workflow, not evidence of a security guarantee. These are documentation-based steps, and the suitability of a particular screenshot depends on what remains visible in your saved result.
For a final check, open the file from the same folder you will use when attaching it. Read it as the recipient would, including small text near the edges. If any intended contact detail is still legible, fix the image or withhold it and send another form of evidence.
