Check an NC image before using it on an ad-supported site
Evaluate an NC-labeled image before placing it on an ad-supported page by tracing its exact license and intended use.
Treat an NC-marked image as unresolved for an ad-supported site until you have checked the license on that exact image and established that your intended use is allowed. The CC BY-NC 4.0 summary prohibits uses primarily intended for commercial advantage or monetary compensation. The Creative Commons reuse guide advises checking each work’s license.
Find the original page or other reliable license information for the image. Record the full license label, including the NC condition and any other letters attached to it. Then describe the intended placement: the page where the image will appear, the presence of advertising, and any edits you plan to make. Those details matter to the decision. Do not infer permission merely because the image is easy to download or because another page uses it.
If the intended use does not clearly fit the license terms, choose an image whose license clearly permits that use or seek permission from the rights holder for this use. Keep the permission or license information with your editorial record so the choice can be checked later. If you switch images, repeat the license check for the replacement rather than carrying over the first image’s terms.
For an editorial decision, write down the exact license version and source URL beside the image filename, then note where the image will appear and whether that page earns or promotes revenue. The NC restriction concerns the use, so an image being free to download does not answer this question. If the proposed use is uncertain, do not rely on a generic “free image” label; look for a license that expressly permits the intended commercial use or seek permission that covers it. Save the permission wording with the source record.
Inspect the decision before the image goes on the page. The image file, its source, the full license label, and the planned use should all refer to the same work. A credit line can identify a creator and license, but it does not remove an NC restriction.
An ad-supported page raises a compatibility question; this guide does not classify every such use as commercial under the license. When the classification or permission remains unclear, the documented NC definition alone cannot settle the case.
Before replacing a held image, inspect the replacement’s own terms. CC BY 4.0 permits commercial reuse with attribution under its conditions, while other files may have separate notices or rights that still need review. The practical publication check is whether you can point to permission for this file in this use, not whether another image from the same collection was reusable.
